Dr. Barry Herstik was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. After graduating from South Shore High School, he attended Binghamton University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. He did his graduate work at the William M. Scholl College of Podiatry in Chicago, Illinois, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Next, Barry completed a two-year residency at Kern Hospital for Special Surgery in Warren, Michigan. During residency, he mastered his skills as a specialist in a variety of foot ailments, concentrating on foot surgery and diabetic foot care.
"Podiatry was my chosen path because it affords me the opportunity to help people. I am blessed with the ability to be a doctor, a healer, and, therefore, an integral part of the community. Most of my patients come to me in pain, but I feel confident I can help rid them of that pain. By treating their various ailments, my goal is always that they leave my care healthy, ultimately teaching them about their feet."
Dr. Herstik’s parents were teachers and instilled in him an innate desire and ability to educate his patients about their foot problems. By combining his medical knowledge and expertise with the patient’s newfound understanding of their condition, he has achieved an unprecedented success rate.
"I communicate with my patients, helping them along their path to healing and allowing them to become an key part of their healing process."
Dr. Herstik focuses most of his energy and daily routines around his practice of Podiatric Medicine. However, he balances his life with various hobbies, including photography, writing short stories, and traveling.
"Traveling grounds me, allowing me the opportunity to explore the world and learn about new cultures. I meet interesting people from all walks of life wherever I travel, and they teach me about their way of life. There is a special feeling when I walk amongst the people of a foreign culture, eat their food, dance to the local music, and just observe the daily routines. I try to get a feel for their ways, and am reminded not to take for granted the life that I lead."
Traveling to foreign lands gives Dr. Herstik an unlimited resource for his passion for photography and writing. He enjoys sharing his travel stories with his patients, comparing his experiences with their’s. The walls of his office are adorned with the photos from his travels.
Barry works closely with his brother, Ivan, and they have been partners since 1993. He especially enjoys the teamwork and camaraderie they have developed, and they use that to their advantage during surgery where they routinely assist each other.
"Working with Ivan has been a great experience, as he has guided me and helped me grow into the doctor and person I am today. We both use each other as sounding boards and as reliable sources of knowledge and experience that enhance our practices and benefit our patients. We take pride in trying to create a family-like office environment."
